What animal sign were you born under 你属什么?
I was born in the year of the Cock / Mine is the Coak
Rat
rats desert a sinking ship(船沉鼠先逃,这一谚语意指那些一遇到危险就争先寻求安全或一看见困难便躲得老远的人。)
The black Ox has trod on sb’s foot表示灾祸已降临到某人头上。
虎——Tiger
Hare
make a hare of sb愚弄某人。
start a hare。
You start a hare ever time at the meeting
1 First catch your hare
2 You cannot run with the hare and hunt with hounde
Dragon
the old Dragon:魔鬼。
Snake
John’s behavior should him to be a snake
a snake in the grass潜伏的敌人或危险。
to warm a snake in one’s bosom养虎贻患,姑息坏人。
Takd heed of the snake in the grass
Horse
1 get on the high horse
2 work like a horse
3 horse doctor
4 dark horse
The voters were surprised when the dark horse won the nomination
Sheep
1 As well be hanged for a sheep as a lamb
2 There’s a black sheep in every flock
3 He that makes himself a sheep shall be eaten by the wolf
4 The sheep who tallks peace with a wolf will soon be mutton
Monkey
What are you doing, you young monkey !
Stop monkeying about with the TV set !
put sb’s monkey up使某人生气,激怒某人;
Your last word has really put his monkey up你最后一句话实在使他大为生气;
又如:
make a monkey of愚弄;
a monkey with a long tail抵押;
get the monkey off戒除吸毒恶习;
have a monkey on one’s back毒瘾很深。
Cock
Cock of the walk / school支配别人的人;
a cock of the loft / dunghill在小天地中称王称霸的人;
Live like fighting cocke生活很好,尤指吃得好;
Cock - and - bull story
It is a sad house where the hen crows louder than the cock
Dog
You dirty dog !
a lucky dog幸运儿;
a sly dog暗中寻欢的人和暗地里偷鸡摸狗的人;
a dog in the manger占着茅坑不拉屎的人。
2 Every dog has his day凡人皆有得意日(意指:大家都有走运的一天)。
猪——Boar
在英语中boar一词指未阉割的公猪和公野猪,涉及猪的词语有pig(猪、的小猪、的野猪),hog(食用猪)、的sow(牝猪),swine(猪:旧用法)。
1 I can smell a rat
2 Why buy the cow when the milk is free
Why buy the cow when the milk is free
Don`t have a cow! She looks like a cow
3 A leopard doesn`t change its spots
4 How could I ever trust that snake in the grass
You are such a snake in the grass
5 I am so hungry I can eat a horse
I am so hungry I can eat a horse I can eat a horse I can eat a hog
6 I quit smoking, I don`t want monkey on my back
Monkey on my back Smoking is monkey on my back You are monkey on my back
7 You chicken
Now we know who is the chicken!
Hey! Don`t chicken out!
8 This is like chicken-and-egg
Does that the book become famous because of the author It`s just like chicken-and-egg
9 Those fighters just had a dog-fight in the sky
This is a dog-eat-dog world Every dog has its day
10 Let`s pig out
I can eat a hog
11Bull market or bear market
Don`t give me that bull
12 Hey, you turkey
13 She is a fox She is foxy
She is a hot tamale 的意思差不多, 都是指那些很酷辣的女生 穿著打扮各方面都显得和其它人不同 而 She is foxy 就跟 She is y 差不多, 都是指女人很性感的意思
14 Cat got your tongue
Cat got your tongue
Cat got your tongue
15 She is a social butterfly
She is a social butterfly
16 You let the small fish go to catch the big fish
You let the small fish go to catch the big fish
Don`t fish in the trouble water 就是别混水摸鱼的意思 而 feed the fish 则有晕船的意思, 这些各位可能都不知道吧
17 Once bitten twice shy
If you are bitten by a snake, you will be afraid of rope in ten years No, I am sorry Once bitten twice shy
18 Fair for the goose is fair for the gander
I just want it to be fair between you and me 你就可以反唇相讥道, Fair for the goose is fair for gander
What`s the difference between "geese" and "goose" (因为我一心认为那明明是鹅, 应该叫 goose) 结果那个老美都快笑翻了, 说 Goose is single and geese is plural
19, You can lead a horse to water, but you can`t make him drink
Don`t put the cart before the horse Don`t look the gift in the horse mouth
20 You can`t make a silk purse out of a sow`s ear
You can`t make a silk purse out of a sow`s ear
