1．作者的不同社会背景
简·奥斯汀生活在18世纪，而夏洛蒂·勃朗特生活在19世纪，不同的社会背景让她们塑造出了不同的人物形象。
在简·奥斯汀生活的年代，上流社会的年轻女性实际上是不可能真正获得独立的，工作、大学、政治等皆把女性拒之门外。因此伊莉莎白的观点，即尽管咖苔琳夫人不是郡和平委员会的成员，但是她却是自己生活中的法官，这一观点极具讽刺性，因为在当时妇女是不可能成为法官的。那时，只有少数职业对女性开放，并且这些工作大都低贱，待遇不高，环境恶劣，因此，许多上流社会女性只有通过结婚或继承的手段得到金钱，只有少之又少的女性是职业女性，她们可以自己赚钱养活自己，获得独立。那个年代，没结婚的女性都要与自己的家人住在一起，婚姻成了她们挣脱家庭束缚，远离父母庇护的唯一手段。由此可见，有些女性选择婚姻是因为婚姻是获得经济保障、逃离家庭的唯一可行途径，这也是伊丽莎白与简·爱相比缺乏自立的原因。
夏洛蒂·勃朗特生活在19世纪极其辉煌的维多利亚时代，人们推崇团结，节俭，自控，个人应当为了国家的繁荣而努力工作。由于社会经济的繁荣，许多女性，尤其是中产阶级的女性有了自己的休闲时间，她们可以自己安排自己的时间，维多利亚时代的女性具有主权意识。像简·爱这样一个普通的女性，相貌平平、身材矮小，但是具有叛逆精神就成了当时塑造女性形象的一个探索。简·爱勇敢地冲破传统的枷锁，满怀热情地追求爱情和幸福。她要求与男性平起平坐，她要求女性的解放和精神上的独立，简·爱是第一个具有独立性并且以其独特的方式对待爱情、生活、社会甚至宗教的女性形象。
2 女权主义
伊丽莎白和简·爱是两位伟大的叛逆女性，她们是英国文学史上两位追求独立并以独特的方式对待爱情和生活的两个重要女性形象。她们自尊自爱，追求独立，不畏强权，追求与男性平的地位，她们的这种性格取决于作者对生活的态度，而这两位作者都具有一个共同点，即女权主义。
简·奥斯汀的作品经常描写男女之间的关系，揭露了她那个年代的女性问题，以此来批判社会，尤其批判社会对女性的影响。她是女权主义的先锋，即使在那个年代，婚姻、孩子是女性的职业，但是她作品中的女主人公并不仅仅对婚姻和孩子感兴趣。夏洛蒂·勃朗特在《简·爱》中反映了女性渴望独立，追求平等的愿望，着重描写了妇女的地位、精神上的独立及个性发展的过程。它向我们展示了女主人公为求得独立而作斗争。传记作家都强调夏洛蒂·勃朗特的孤独的乡村生活，如果表现不好，舅妈就会用“地狱之火”对待她。生活给她上了严酷的一课，五岁时她失去了母亲。夏洛蒂·勃朗特正是用自己窒息的童年作为题材来达到自己艺术上的成就，这一结果就是塑造了简·爱这一不朽形象。
二、简爱与伊丽莎白的共同之处
1 自尊自爱
简·爱和伊丽莎白都是追求精神独立的女性，在那个男性统治着几乎所有的社会领域的年代，具备这样的品质是十分可嘉的。简·爱甚至是在童年时代就认识到自尊的重要性，当她的舅妈认为她是一个容易惹事、行为恶劣的女孩时，她的自尊心受到了极大的伤害，不管多么艰难，她都不会贬低自己也不会吹嘘自己。在她的内心深处有着理性和规则，这让她尊重自己。她爱上了罗切斯特先生，一是因为罗切斯特先生尊重她；另一方面是因为，她认为自己有资格赢得一个男人的爱。当她得知罗切斯特有一个疯妻子时她毅然选择离开，这进一步证明了她具有很强的自尊心。
