英国人普遍说Happy Christmas，因为Happy没有卷舌音，发音比较容易；而美国人普遍说Merry Christmas。

在英文解释里，Happy表示快乐，而Merry有令人感到快乐的意思。如果一个人乐，还不如大家同乐，所以一般都用Merry Christmas。

直接从字面意思上看，Merry这个日常生活英语词汇是“快活”的意思，但是更准确点，是指那种喝了点酒，脸微微泛红的那种快活，可能这也更能表现出圣诞节温馨的气氛。

当然这只是表面的解释，其实真正发明用“Merry”的人是狄更斯。说的准确点：“Merry Christmas”这句祝福语，是在狄更斯的《圣诞颂歌》（A Christmas Carol）中首次出现的。
