       衬衫原来是指用以衬在礼服内的短袖的单衣，即去掉袖头的衫子。在宋代便是没有袖头的上衣，有衬在里边短而小的衫，也有穿在外面较长的衫。如在《水浒传》之《林教头风雪山神》中，林冲“把身上的雪都抖了，把上盖（上身的外衣）白布衫脱将下来”便是一例。在古代的时候，妇女们穿得短上衣叫“衫子”，又叫“半衣”。唐朝文学家元稹在《杂忆》诗中便有“忆得双文衫子薄”的诗句。清末民初之际，由于欧风东渐，人们便开始穿西装，把衬衫穿在西服的里边，作为衬衣，上系领带中间开口，一般都是五个纽扣。
