约在公元六世纪时，英国神学家比得（bede）在《教会史》中提到了一个故事。故事中有一位要为king oswy新娘护航的牧师，在临行之前，主教艾丹（aidan）给了他一瓶圣油，希望使他在海上遇到风暴时能渡过难关，顺利平安到达目的地。船在离开不久之后，果然遇到了风浪，牧师想起主教给的圣油，便将其倒入波涛汹涌的海中，没一会的功夫，海面便慢慢平静了下来。

一直到今天，“将油倒入混乱的水中”便表示息事宁人。而在现代英语中，此语也可指用外资辞令或实际行动消除剑拔弩张的紧张局势。

例 ：The couple argued fiercely and no matter how I tried to pour oil on the troubled water, they just ignored me 那对夫妻吵架吵得很激烈，不论我如何试着平息他们的怒气，他们都不会理坐我。
