出自《鹅妈妈的故事》。从前，有一位长得很漂亮的女孩，她有一位恶毒的继母与两位心地不好的继姐。自从她的父亲过世之后，她便经常受到继母与两位姐姐的欺负，被逼着去做粗重的工作，经常弄得全身满是灰尘，因此被戏称为“灰姑娘”。

起源和流行版本

现在的灰姑娘的故事原在欧洲民间广为流传，后来才由法国作家夏尔·佩罗和德国的格林兄弟加以采集编写。在许多种语言包括法语、德语、意大利语、瑞典语，甚至汉语（叶限）、斯拉夫语、凯尔特语中都有不同版本的类似故事。

《灰姑娘》（意大利语：Cenerontola ; 法语：Cendrillon；英语：Cinderella；德语：Aschenputtel），又音译作《仙杜丽拉》或《仙杜瑞拉》亦称作《辛蒂瑞拉》，是一本著名的童话。灰姑娘也是这一故事的女主角。

女主角名字由来

Cendrillon是灰姑娘的法文名字，但它其实不是此人物真正的名字，而是一个外号。Cendrillon一词由cendre和souillon这两个法文单词合成而来。构成Cendrillon的第一部分的“cendre”在法文中是“灰”的意思，这样取名是因为灰姑娘工作后躺在炭灰上休息，总是脏兮兮的；souillon是“做粗活的女仆”的意思。
