故事的开端是泰德最好的朋友马修(杰森-斯格勒饰)向他已经交往了九年的女朋友幼儿园阿姨莉莉(艾丽森-汉尼根饰)求婚。这时27岁的泰德意识到自己也该寻找自己的另一半了。泰德的朋友巴尼是一个有西装癖的白领，对于泡妞他总有数不清的独到见解。泰德对在酒吧邂逅的美丽女记者罗宾一见钟情，而巴尼却不断的“劝告”他千万不要结婚，应该在30岁以前享尽单身的乐趣。
