提到这本书我们就不得不谈到本书的作者尼古拉·奥斯特洛夫斯基是俄罗斯人，一个普通的工人、红军战士、共青团基层干部。1904年出生在乌克兰。《钢铁是怎样炼成的》不是他的自传体小说，但是其中确实有大量情节取材于他的亲身经历。他同小说主人公保尔一样，年幼家贫失学，做过小工，参加红军大过仗，负过伤，后来也是双目失明，全身瘫痪。在身陷绝境的情况下，他不甘心于吃喝、呼吸、等死，于是拿起了唯一还能利用的武器——笔，不，这么说也不准确，因为后来他连笔也拿不动了，而是靠口述，请亲友笔录，历时三载，克服难以想象的困难，创作了这部不朽的杰作，实现了重返战斗岗位的理想。

《钢铁是怎样炼成的》是人们爱不释手的读物，我在阅读这部作品时，常常被尼古拉那看似平淡而又充满内涵的语句激动得热泪盈眶。我一遍又一遍的阅读，不能干部市为了曲折的情节，急于了解事件是怎样发展的，结局又是如何。事件的发展与结局，我早已熟知。我一再地阅读这部作品，知识因为它引起了我强烈的共鸣，激烈地震撼着我的心灵，给我带来了无穷的精神力量。

半个多世纪以来，多少的年轻人受到它的教育和鼓舞。保尔·柯察金和我国的刘胡兰、董存瑞、黄继光、雷锋、焦裕禄等英雄一样，受到我们的崇敬与爱戴。他的名言：人最宝贵的是生命。生命每个人只有一次。人的一生干应当这样度过：回首往事，他不会因为虚度年华而悔恨，也不会因为卑鄙庸俗而羞愧；临终之际，他又说：“我的整个生命和全部的精力，都献给了世界上最壮丽的事业——为解放全人类而斗争。”这句话已被我作为我人生的座右铭。
