没有刻意的去找寻，偶然看到这首诗的英文原作。这是一首被翻译了无数遍的诗歌，最出名的版本应该就是袁可嘉先生的。不仅仅因为他作为诗人名气大，也是因为这首诗歌的中段，他翻译的最好。我以前就是迷醉于那“朝圣者的灵魂”的，但是读完原作之后，觉得袁先生仍然有误译的地方，比如把sorrows具象化地翻译为“皱纹”，或许袁先生是为了追求韵脚的谐畅吧，但对诗歌的原意不免是个伤害。此外，第一段的“their shadows deep”袁先生翻译为“浓重的阴影”，似乎有些把涵义狭窄化了，有些过于低沉。至于飞白先生的译文，虽然相对更信实一些，但在诗歌意思上似乎仍然不够准确。象“paced upon the mountains overhead”，简单地翻译为“步上高山”，好像也伤害了诗意。最后一句将face翻译为“赧颜”，未免有些画蛇添足。第一段中那个“their shadows deep”，飞白先生翻译为“青幽的晕影”，则有些太文学化了，修饰太过。我读了一下原文，觉得这个“their shadows deep”应该是与“the pilgrim soul in you”相呼应的，正如“soft look”与“your beauty ”相呼应一样。他们都是在美丽外表和柔和目光之下一种诗人为之深爱的沉静之影，那种朝圣者的灵魂。
这是首名作，很多人都曾经受过它的影响，想象过自己或者是他人就是那个“朝圣者的灵魂”。比如杜拉斯《情人》的开头：
我已经老了，有一天，在一处公共场所的大厅里，有一个男人向我走来。他主动介绍自己，他对我说：“我认识你，永远记得你。那时候，你还很年轻，人人都说你美，现在，我是特为来告诉你，对我来说，我觉得现在你比年轻的时候更美，那时你是年轻女人，与你那时的面貌相比，我更爱你现在备受摧残的面容。
再比如穆旦《赠别》：
多少人的青春在这里迷醉，
然后走上熙攘的路程，
朦胧的是你的怠倦，云光和水，
他们的自己失去了随着就遗忘，
多少次了你的园门开启，
你的美繁复，你的心变冷，
尽管四季的歌喉唱得多好，
当无翼而来的夜露凝重——
等你老了，独自对着炉火，
就会知道有一个灵魂也静静地，
他曾经爱你的变化无尽，
旅梦碎了，他爱你的愁绪纷纷。
还有在网络上偶然搜索到的叫李琦的人写的：

或者 多少年后，我是写这首诗的人
我也曾经希望自己能够写出这样的诗歌来，但是我知道自己从来不是感情纤细的人，所以早早就放弃了痴心妄想。 李琦的诗歌虽然也还可以，但是有一种明显的明信片式的美感，缺乏一种狠劲。就是那种直抵人心的力量。让人痛并快乐的力量。痛并快乐，虽然早就看不惯白岩松那个SB脸，但是不得不承认这个短语对于一种瞬间状态的准确把握和描述。穆旦写的是一个小文艺青年的爱情，而且这种爱情注定要失败。因为在他实际上不过是沉浸在自己的幻想里，他爱的是自己的灵魂，而对方是变化无尽，所以他的爱也将会变化无尽。嘿嘿。至于杜拉斯，所有的女人都会被《情人》的这个开头感动，因为所有的女人都会老的，而所有的女人又都是想被爱的。当一个女人的容颜备受摧残的时候，她最向往的就是一个男人从已经对衰老的自己表现漠然的人群中走出来，表达出那份超越时间之上的爱。但是，事实证明，这是爱做梦的女人们做的又一个梦而已。
至于叶芝呢？据说这首诗歌是叶芝为女演员、爱尔兰独立运动战士Maud Gonne写的。在1889年，24岁的叶芝遇到高纳，并爱上了她，多次向她求婚，均遭拒绝，但叶芝终生爱慕着她，为她写下了许多诗，《当你老了》就是其中一首。很让人感动的故事。但是故事总是要感动人的，要是不感动人，我们为什么去编写故事？爱，是一个伟大的语言，但是伟大的语言常常是谎言。比如说：伟大、光明、正确。比如说：万岁万岁万万岁。在这首诗歌中，我感觉到了爱，但是也感到了因为爱的离去，叶芝那个混小子赌气式的诅咒：你要是不接受我的爱，就老了之后孤独一辈子！你就后悔吧你！世界上没有卖后悔药的！到时候我死翘翘了！等你在炉火旁边打瞌睡，自个儿自言自语的时候，我的爱将在天边的繁星中看着你！
或许我就是一个不懂感情的人吧。冷漠惯了。不相信甜言蜜语，不相信柔情蜜意。所以对叶芝的诗歌，也是这么理解，或许不对，但是爱谁谁！当我看到这首诗歌，开始喜欢它，它就已经属于我。它开始有了我的生命和感情。它开始成为我生命的注脚。可是，可是，当我心念一转的时候，我在想，或许我们每个人都不过是别人生命中的注脚吧！三月的时候，曾经贴过郑愁予的诗歌，“是过客，不是归人”，其实意思或许也是“是注脚，不是正文”。甚至连注脚都不是，使橡皮擦擦去的痕迹。
