Underground，一般特指伦敦地铁，其他国家和城市的地铁鲜有用这个的，所以 Underground 并不常用，在其他城市也不能这麼说，非要在其他地方说的话最好说全了 Underground Railway。

同时，口语中 Tube 也是特指伦敦地铁，二者没什麼大区别，例如它的官网就写著：Tube｜London Underground。

Metro，原特指巴黎地铁 Métropolitain，後来广泛流传到欧洲各地，该词也因而从法语进入英语，故在英语里指地铁的时候，偏英式。

命名时在美国只有 DC 地铁的名字用 Metro。在北美 Metro 也有「大都会地区」的意思，即法语 Métropolitain 的本意。

在部分城市指交通系统的时候，Metro 不止是地铁，比如在洛杉矶 Metro 是指包括公共汽车在内的所有公交系统，公交线路也直接称 

Metro。再比如，拥有港英血统的北京地铁4号线，也称自己为 Beijing Metro Line 4，而不是与其他线路一样自称 Beijing Subway。

Subway，偏美式，而在英式英语里大多数情况是「过街地下通道」的意思。
