中国没有真正字面意义上的绅士,绅士是西欧国家(主要指英国男性)的概念,“绅士”这个词和中国的传统古典文化相冲突且格格不入,中国没有引入这个概念,在文革期间,由于毛泽东的去其糟粕、取其精华的观念,左派们曾经引入“绅士”这个概念来制约男人作风,并加进了古代汉语词典中。文革失败后,“绅士”这个词被邓小平从古代汉语字典里取消,并把该词送入了那些含有西方外来词汇概念的现代汉语词典中,邓小平之所以从古汉语字典里取消“绅士”这个“外来物”,是因为邓小平认为中国只有“君子”,要尊重中国的传统文化。

中国只有“君子”。“君子”这个词诞生于古代中国,如李白那样恃才放旷、不与世俗乱象为伍的男子,就是一名“君子”。

中国无“绅士”,只有“君子”,“绅士”是西方的概念,与中国文化无关。

绅士一词,在近代社会中,有着特殊的地位,非官而近官,非民而近民,是高于平民的一个封建等级阶层。

“绅士”英语gentleman一词,作个拆字游戏的话,gentle在字典中,解释为优雅、上品,可爱、宽大、稳健、亲切、有礼等等。man为男士。一位有着上述品格的男士即可称为绅士,这又有什么可以指责的?

其实欧洲的绅士和中国的君子是同一种人。在中国古代,君子就是有文化,受过高等教育的人,才是君子。可惜,时代的变迁,封建皇朝的衰败,君子这个称号,也成了守旧落后的象征,和封建皇朝一起被埋葬。
