　　辛德瑞拉（Cinderella），又译仙度瑞拉、辛的蕊拉等。

　　是童话故事“灰姑娘”中灰姑娘的名字，在中文译本中我们只叫她灰姑娘，音译则为辛德瑞拉，现在“辛德瑞拉”也指代灰姑娘似的女孩或者爱情。

　　起源

　　灰姑娘的形象可以上溯到很早的时期。希腊历史学家斯特拉波（《Geographica》17，133）曾在公元前1世纪记叙了一位嫁到埃及的希腊少女洛多庇斯的故事，这被认为是《灰姑娘》故事的最早版本。洛多庇斯当时正在溪水边洗衣服，突然一只鹰飞过将她的鞋子攫去并让鞋子掉在了身在孟斐斯城的法老的脚下。法老随后要求国内所有的女子试穿这只鞋子，看看是否合脚，最后找到了洛多庇斯。法老爱上了洛多庇斯并娶她为妻。这个故事后来也见于克劳狄俄斯·埃利安（Claudius Aelianus）的《史林杂俎》（Various Historia）中。

　　《灰姑娘》的另一个版本是中国的叶限，见于公元860年左右段成式的小说《酉阳杂俎》。故事中勤劳可爱的叶限饲养有一条金鱼，金鱼和叶限关系亲密，只在叶限每次走到池边时才浮上水面伸出头来。后来金鱼被叶限后母所杀，叶限按天神的指引将鱼骨堀起，并因此得以最后穿着体面的衣裳偷偷参加了某个节日盛会。当匆忙回家时，叶限落下了一只鞋子。岛国“陀汗”的国王拾获了鞋子，并与叶限相爱娶她为妻。

　　此外，中世纪的《一千零一夜》等许多作品中都有记叙类似的故事。

　　在欧洲，《灰姑娘》的最早版本名为《La Gatta Cenerentola》，也称《The Hearth Cat》，见于意大利童话采集者吉姆巴地斯达·巴西耳1635年的《五日谈》（Pentamerone）一书中。这一版本为后来法国作家夏尔·佩罗和格林兄弟的版本奠定了基础。

　　流行版

　　《灰姑娘》最为流行的一个版本出自法国作家夏尔·佩罗。这个版本中新增了南瓜、仙女和水晶鞋。曾有人认为，佩罗版本中的灰姑娘穿的原是松鼠毛皮做的鞋（“pantoufle en vair”），只是在故事被翻译成英文之后，鞋子被误当作是水晶做的，导致了水晶鞋的出现。

　　另一个著名的版本出自格林兄弟。这个版本中，帮助灰姑娘参加舞会的不是仙女而是母亲坟头的许愿树。同时，两个姐姐想要通过把脚削掉一小部分的方式让脚穿上鞋子，以期骗过王子。两只小鸟提醒了王子，在故事的最后还把两个姐姐的眼珠啄掉。

　　Cendrillon是灰姑娘的法文名字，但它其实不是此人物真正的名字，而是一个外号。Cendrillon一词由cendre和souillon这两个法文单词合成而来。构成Cendrillon的第一部份的“cendre”在法文中是“灰”的意思，这样取名是因为灰姑娘工作后躺在炭灰上休息，总是脏兮兮的；souillon是“贱人”的意思，是两位姐姐对灰姑娘的蔑称。灰姑娘还有另外一个外号，叫Cucendron（cu是cul的意思，即中文的“屁股”；cendron跟上述的cendre的意思一样，即“灰”），也是她俗气的姐姐所取的。而至于灰姑娘的真正名字，我们无从得知。

　　灰姑娘的这两个外号皆来自于一直象征着羞辱与苦修的灰（cendre）一词：《圣经》、《奥德赛》与教会父老都曾使用过。

　　这个故事类型通常包含以下因素：一位善良而不幸的女主人公，女主人公母亲的离世，新家庭成员对女主人公的欺侮，帮助女主人公克服难题并最终为她带来幸福的神奇力量，用于识别女主人公的一件物事——鞋。因此斯蒂·汤普森（Stith Thompson）在《民间文学母题索引》(Motif-Index of Folk Literature)中，把“灰姑娘”故事归为阿奈尔－汤普森故事类型。

　　我国唐代段成式在其编撰的《酉阳杂俎》续集《支诺皋》里所记录的《叶限》故事是世界上“灰姑娘”型民间故事的最早记载（约为公元9世纪中期）。在这个故事里，帮助女主人公的是鱼骨头，为她带来幸福的是只金履。但因为《叶限》的记录年代更确切更久远，以及文本中所暗示的当时民众对此故事常有耳闻的语气，使得“叶限”故事看起来似更接近于此型故事的本来面目，因而有些学者由此认为该类故事起源于中国。

　　1697年，巴黎出版的佩罗(Charles Perrault)的《Histoires ou contes du temps passé，avec des moralités: Contes de ma mère l'Oye》（《鹅妈妈的故事》）。在很长一段时间里，人们一直认为这本故事集中所收录的《灰姑娘Cinderella》故事是欧洲此类故事的最早记载。当然，在欧洲已发现了一些记录年代更早的故事异文，但是佩罗的“灰姑娘”故事却是有最大影响的一个。三个异文中，只有在佩罗的故事里，才有仙女、南瓜车和水晶鞋这些为人们所熟知的“灰姑娘”原素。
