一天清晨，彼得打开大门，走进屋前的大牧场。他的好朋友小鸟在树梢上叽叽喳喳地欢叫着："这里多么宁静！"一只鸭子摇摇摆摆地走过来，因为彼得忘了关门，它高兴极了，决定趁些机会到牧场中的深水池中游个痛快。小鸟看见鸭子，就飞到鸭子旁边的草地上，摆出一副鄙夷的样子说："你连飞都不会，也能算是鸟吗？"鸭子不甘示弱的说："你连游泳都不会，才不能算是鸟呢。"说着，鸭子就扑通一声跳进了池塘。鸭子不停地游啊游，小鸟也在池塘边不停地跳啊跳。他们互不服气，争吵不休。

突然，彼得在草丛中发现一只猫。猫蹑手蹑脚地爬着穿过草地。它轻轻地对自己说："小鸟这家伙正忙着和鸭子争吵，趁这机会我可以抓到他。"它一面想，一面悄悄地溜到了小鸟后面。"喂！当心！"彼得叫了起来，小鸟"嗖"地一声飞上了树枝。鸭子见了很生气，对着猫愤怒的嘎嘎在叫。猫绕着树转了一圈，心里暗暗捉摸：该不该爬上去呢？恐怕还没爬到，小鸟就飞走了。这时候，爷爷出来了，他看见彼得跑进了牧场，非常生气，大声嚷道："这里是个危险的地方，万一有狼从森林中跑出来那可不得了。"彼得毫不在乎爷爷的警告，因为象他那样的少先队员是什么都不怕的。爷爷气呼呼地拉住彼得的手，将他拖进大屋子里，还加了一把大锁。

彼得才离开不久，果然从树林里钻出了一只大灰狼。猫一眼看到了，吓得马上爬到了树上。鸭子吓得嘎嘎直叫，惊慌失措的竟从池塘里跳了出来。它拼命地跑啊跑，大灰狼在后面不停的追啊追，最后，大灰狼终于抓住了鸭子，一口将它吞进了肚子。现在猫蹲在树枝上，小鸟在树枝的另一端，远远地离开猫。狼在树下转来转去，用贪婪的眼睛望着它们。彼得在门缝里注视着外面发生的一切，他一点都不感到害怕。他跑进屋子，找到了一根结实的绳子。随后，急急忙忙地爬上了高高的围墙，顺着伸进围墙的树枝爬上了大树，对停在树梢上的小鸟轻轻地叫道："飞下去，到狼的头顶上转圈圈……不过要小心，别让他抓住。"小鸟差不多飞得翅膀都要碰到狼的脑袋了。狼气得左右扑腾。看，小鸟怎样激怒了大灰狼。看，大灰狼双怎样白费力气的想抓住小鸟。小鸟太机灵了，大灰狼气呼呼地直喘气，一点办法也没有。彼得做了一个绳套，小心翼翼地放下树去，一下子套住了狼的尾巴，然后死死地用力拉紧。狼感到自己被套住了，发疯般地乱蹦乱跳，拼命挣扎。但彼得已经将绳子的头牢牢地拴在大树上。狼越是挣扎，绳索勒得越是紧。这时候，几个猎人循着狼的足迹从森林里走出来，他们一面走，一面开枪。

彼得在树上大声的叫喊："别开枪！小鸟和我已经把狼抓住了。请帮助我们把它送到动物园去吧。"现在，请想象凯旋的队伍吧。领头在前面的是彼得，后边是押着大灰狼的猎人。爷爷和猫走在最后。爷爷摇着头说："抓住了，这很不错。但假如彼得没有把狼抓住，那可真是不得了。"在大伙头顶上盘旋起舞的小鸟，快活地叫道"我们多神气。彼得和我多友好。大家来看我们抓住了什么！"这时候，如果你仔细听一下，还能听到鸭子在狼肚子里发出的嘎嘎叫声。那是因为狼吞得太性急，鸭子在狼肚子里还活着呐。
