他善于用美人、香草,以喻君子;恶木秽草,以喻小人,通过比兴手法把君王信谗、奸佞当道、爱国志士报国无门的情景,写得淋漓尽致。

屈原由于受霄小的排挤陷害,使曾经对他十分信任并依靠他变法图强的楚怀王,对他产生怀疑以至疏远放逐;楚襄王当政后,更为昏庸,朝政日益腐败,楚国面临亡国的危机,而对屈原这样的爱国志士迫害有加。
屈原正直的性格,高洁的人格,爱国的行动,反倒都成了罪过。他将自己满腔愤激的情绪,发而为诗,形成了激楚的情调。这种激楚的情调,在《九章》中表现得十分强烈。
