Ted开始他寻找完美配偶的旅程，遇见了一个来自加拿大的雄心勃勃的年轻记者Robin Scherbatsky（蔻比·史莫德斯），并很快地爱上她，但是约会的第一天晚上，就因为过快的向Robin表明I love you而将其吓坏，导致恋爱告吹。Robin并不喜欢婚姻的束缚，崇尚自由独立，两人的观念有比较大的差别，因此两人决定当朋友就好。

Ted之后在朋友的婚礼里遇见了维多利亚，两人的暧昧让Robin很嫉妒并意识到她确实对Ted有感情，但是当Ted决定向维多利亚表白时，她还是隐忍了自己的感情、鼓励Ted放手一搏。维多利亚搬到了德国学习烹饪，和Ted尝试远距离恋情。当Ted得知Robin对他有感情时，他欺骗她他已经跟维多利亚分手了。在二人几乎要产生火花之时，维多利亚打电话来，而Robin意外的接起电话，知道了真相并且十分生气。此事件之后，Ted悲催的和维多利亚分手了，而他和Robin之间也陷入僵局，但最终在某个高中毕业晚会上，二人触景生情，关系再度和好。
