魏晋志怪小说迭出，所记之事，荒诞不经。刘义庆的《世说新语》却务求真实可信，几乎可当信史读。譬如孝子王祥“卧冰求鲤”的巨举，就弃而不记。体现他孝心的事，只写他如何精心看护后母喜爱的李树。魏晋的人似乎特别爱吃李，“竹林七贤”之一的王戎有两件逸事，就都跟李有关。一则写他早慧，叫“道旁李苦”，成了凡人皆知的典故。另一则不太为人所知，写他的贪吝：说王戎家有好的李树，果子卖了，怕别人得到种子，总是先把李核钻破。刘义庆亲见王戎是怎么钻的吗？我就有些不信。别说魏晋，就是用今天的技术，要把李核钻破，让种子不能成活；而又要保证李肉不破，让果子还能卖，除非用激光，恐怕真没有太好的办法。这王戎当时怎么就能“恒钻其核”？实在让人费解。但千古而下，人们都信，汤一介给《世说新语》写导读，还特地强调了这个故事，至少他信。

《世说新语》毕竟是小说，虽属纪实，难免讹传，那就看看史书吧。《宋书》中的谢灵运，东晋时担任过永嘉太守，赴任途中，肯定经过温岭，作为旅行家，他恐怕堪称史上第一位，留下最著名的典故，就是“谢公屐”。《梦游天姥吟留别》里有“脚著谢公屐，身登青云梯”，至少说明李白深信不疑。但不知李白是穿过这种鞋，还是见过这种鞋，凭什么就信？反正我不信。《宋书·谢灵运传》说他：“登蹑常著木履，上山则去前齿，下山去其后齿。”穿木鞋爬山？想想都怕，谢灵运爬的，大多该是没有石级可走的山，那么，无论这鞋的“前齿”、“后齿”做得如何锐利，怕也是抓不住岩石的。如果此法可行，今天的女士穿高跟鞋爬/1-youshengxiao山，岂不如履平地？有一点生活常识就该想到：木鞋爬山，何来摩擦力？在木鞋底上装木齿，能装得住吗？装上以后，经得起踩吗？这很可能只是谢灵运的一个奇思妙想，他想象能有这么一双鞋，上山下山便能省不少力气。旁人一听，讹传开来，还以为他真有这样的鞋。
