Once upon a time there was an island where all the feelings lived: Happiness, Sadness, Knowledge, and all the others, including Love
One day it was announced to all of the feelings that the island was going to sink to the bottom of the ocean So all the feelings prepared their boats to leave
Love was the only one that stayed She wanted to preserve the island paradise until the last possible moment
When the island was almost totally under, love decided it was time to leave
She began looking for someone to ask for help Just then Richness was passing by in a grand boat Love asked, "Richness, can I e with you on your boat"
Richness answered, "I'm sorry, but there is a lot of silver and gold on my boat and there would be no room for you anywhere"
Then Love decided to ask Vanity for help who was passing by in a beautiful vessel Love cried out, "Vanity, help me please!" "I can't help you," Vanity said, "You are all wet and will damage my beautiful boat"
Next, Love saw Sadness passing by Love said, "Sadness, please let me go with you"
Sadness answered, "Love, I'm sorry, but, I just need to be alone now"
Then, Love saw Happiness Love cried out, "Happiness, please take me with you" But Happiness was so overjoyed8 that he didn't hear Love calling to him
Love began to cry Then, she heard a voice say, "e Love, I will take you with me" It was an elder Love felt so blessed1 and overjoyed that she forgot to ask the elder his name When they arrived on land the elder went on his way Love realized how much she owed the elder
Love then found Knowledge and asked, "Who was it that helped me""It was Time,' Knowledge answered "But why did Time help me when no one else would"Love asked
Knowledge iled and with deep wisdom and sincerity, answered, "Because only Time is capable of understanding how great Love is
An elderly carpenter was ready to retire He told his employer contractor of his plans to leavethe house building business and live a more leisurely life He would miss the paycheck, but heneeded to retire They could get by
The contrctor was sorry to see his good worker go and asked if he could build just one morehouse as a personal favor The carpenter said yes, but in time it was easy to see that his haertwas not in his work He resorted to shoddy workmanship and used inferior materials
It was an unfortunate way to end his career When the carpenter finished his work and thebuilder came to inspect the house, the contractor handed the front door key to the carpenter "This is your house," he said, "my gift to you"
What a shock! What a shame! If he had only known he was building his own house, he wouldhave done it all so differently, Now he had to live in the home hs had built none too well
So it is with us We build our lives in a distracted way, reacting rather than acting, willing toput up less than best At important points we do not give the job our best effort Then with ashock we look at we are now living in the house we have built If we had realized that we woulddone it differently
Think of yourself as the carpenter Think about your house Each day you hammer a nail, place a board, or erect a wall Build wisely
It is the only life you will ever build Even if you live it for only one day more, that day deservesto be lived graciously and with dinity
The plaque on the wall says, "Life ia a do-it-yourself project" Who could say it more clearlyYour life today is the result of your attitudes and choices in the past Your life tomorrow will bethe result of your attitudes and the choices you make today
Balzac once said artistic creation was “an exhausting strug-gle”
He believed that only by tenacious work and fearing notafraid of difficulties could you show yourtalent
It was just likethe soldiers charging the fortress, not relaxing your effort foreven a moment
Once Balzac wrote for hours on end, he was so tired that hecould not hold out any longer
He ran to a friend's home andplunged headlong on the sofaHe wanted to sleep, but he toldhisfriend he must be woken up within an hour
His friend, seeinghim so tired, did not wake him up on timeAfter he woke up,Balzac got veryangry at his friendFortunately his friend had anintimate understanding of him and did notquarrel with him
Balzac did not oke cigarettes, nor did he drink any alco-hol
But he got one habit:while he was writing he always drankvery strong coffee that could almostanaesthetize his stomach
Hedidn't add milk, nor did he add sugar in his coffeeIt would notsatisfy him until it was madebitter
People generally did not liketo drink such bitter coffeeThat had strange stimulus effecttohim, and could help him drive the sleepiness away, according to himself

The Flight of Youth
There are gains for all our losses There are balms for all our pain: But when youth, the dream, departs It takes something from our hearts, And
it never es again
We are stronger, and are better, Under
manhood's sterner reign: Still we feel that
something sweet Following youth, with flying feet, And will never e again
Something beautiful is vanished, And we sigh for it in vain; We behold it everywhere, On the
earth, and in the air, But it never es again!

Virtue美德
Sweet day, so cool, so calm, so bright!
The bridal of the earth and sky--
The dew shall weep thy fall tonight;
For thou must die
Sweet rose, whose hue angry and brave,
Bids the rash gazer wipe his eye,
Thy root is ever in its grave,
And thou must die
Sweet spring, full of sweet days and roses,
A box where sweets pacted lie,
My music shows ye have your closes,
And all must die
Only a sweet and virtuous soul,
Like season'd timber, never gives;
But though the whole world turn to coal,
Then chiefly lives
今宵的露珠儿将为你的消逝而落泪;
犹如干燥备用的木料,永不走样;

The Life I Desired
That must be the story of innumerable couples, and the pattern of life it offers has a homely grace It reminds you of a placid rivulet, meandering oothly through green pastures and shaded by pleasant trees, till at last it falls into the vasty sea; but the sea is so calm, so silent, so indifferent, that you are troubled suddenly by a vague uneasiness Perhaps it is only by a kink in my nature, strong in me even in those days, that I felt in such an existence, the share of the great majority, something amiss I recognized its social value I saw its ordered happiness, but a fever in my blood asked for a wilder course There seemed to me something alarming in such easy delights In my heart was desire to live more dangerously I was not unprepared for jagged rocks and treacherous shoals if I could only have change--change and the excitement of unforeseen

A Greek to Remember
Diogenes was a famous Greek philosopher of thefourth century BC, who established the philosophy ofcynici He often walked about in the daytime holding alighted lantern, peering around as if he were looking forsomething When questioned about his odd behavior, hewould reply, "I am searching for an honest man"
Diogenes held that the good man was self-sufficientand did not require material forts or wealth Hebelieved that wealth and possessions constrainedhumanity's natural state of freedom In keeping with hisphilosophy, he was perfectly satisfied with making hishome in a large tub discarded from the Temple of Cybele, the goddess of nature This earthen tub, called a pithos, and formerly been used for holding wine or oil for thesacrifices at the temple
One day, Alexander the Great, conqueror of half thecivilized world, saw Diogenes sitting in his tub in thesunshine So the king, surrounded by his countries, approached Diogenes and said, "I am Alexander theGreat" The philosopher replied rather contemptuously, "Iam Diogenes, the Cynic" Alexander then asked him if hecould help him in any way "Yes," shot back Diogenes, "don't stand between me and the sun" A surprisedAlexander then replied quickly, "If I were not Alexander, Iwould be Diogenes" 一天,征服了半个文明世界的亚历山大大帝看见提奥奇尼斯坐在大坛里晒太阳。

Knowledge and Virtue
Knowledge is one thing, virtue is another; good sense is not conscience, refinement is not humility, nor is largeness and justness of view faith
Philosophy, however enlightened, however profound, gives no command over the passions, no influential motives, no vivifying principles Liberal Education makes not the Christian, not the Catholic, but the gentleman
It is well to be a gentleman, it is well to have a cultivated intellect, a delicate taste, a candid, equitable, dispassionate mind, a noble and courteous bearing in the conduct of life—these are the connatural qualities of a large knowledge; they are the objects of a University
I am advocating, I shall illustrate and insist upon them; but still, I repeat, they are no guarantee for sanctity or even for conscientiousness, and they may attach to the man of the world, to the profligate, to the heartless, pleasant, alas, and attractive as he shows when decked out in them
Taken by themselves, they do but seem to be what they are not; they look like virtue at a distance, but they are detected by close observers, and in the long run; and hence it is that they are popularly accused of pretense and hypocrisy, not, I repeat, from their own fault, but because their professors and their admirers persist in taking them for what they are not, and are officious in arrogating for them a praise to which they have no claim
Quarry the granite rock with razors, or moor the vessel with a thread of silk, then may you hope with such keen and delicate instruments as human knowledge and human reason to contend against those giants, the passion and the pride of man
A Tribute to the Dog
The best friend a man has in the world may turn against him and become his enemy His son or daughter that he has reared with loving care may prove ungrateful Those who are nearest and dearest to us, those whom we trust with our happiness and our good name may become traitors to their faith
The money that a man has, he may lose It flies away from him, perhaps when he needs it most A man's reputation may be sacrificed in a moment of ill-considered action The people who are prone to fall on their knees to do us honor when success is with us, may be the first to throw the stone of malice when failure settles its cloud upon our heads
The one absolutely unselfish friend that man can have in this selfish world, the one that never deserts him, the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous is his dog A man's dog stands by him in prosperity and in poverty, in health and in sickness He will sleep on the cold ground, where the wintry winds blow and the snow drives fiercely, if only he may be near his master's side He will kiss the hand that has no food to offer
He will lick the wounds and sores that come in encounters with the roughness of the world He guards the sleep of his pauper master as if he were a prince When all other friends desert, he remains When riches take wings, and reputation falls to pieces, he is as constant in his love as the sun in its journey through the heavens
If fortune drives the master forth, an outcast in the world, friendless and homeless, the faithful dog asks no higher privilege than that of accompanying him, to guard him against danger, to fight against his enemies And when the last scene of all comes, and death takes his master in its embrace and his body is laid away in the cold ground, no matter if all other friends pursue their way, there by the graveside will the noble dog be found, his head between his paws, his eyes sad, but open in alert watchfulness, faithful and true even in death

There once were two poor woodsmen who made a living by collecting woods in the mountain One day, they happened to discover two large bag of cotton in the mountain and felt surprisingly happy The cotton was light but valuable, so they carried it on their back and went back home
When they were walking home, one of the woodsmen spotted a large bundle of cloth beside the road So he discussed with his partner whether to discard the cotton and take the cloth instead But his partner held a different view that since he had carried the cotton for such a long way, he would not change it with cloth because all his previous effort would turn out to be in vain Therefore, the other woodsman abandoned the cotton and carried the cloth on his back After walking for a while, the woodsman who carried the cloth spotted several jars of gold disseminated on the ground not far away He felt so thrilled that he was going to be a wealthy man So he gave up the cloth and used his carrying pole to carry two jars of gold, while his partner was still reluctant to abandon the cotton and wondering whether the gold was real or not
However, when they just went down to the foot of the mountain, it began to rain all of a sudden Both of them were wet from head to toes More unfortunately, the woodsman who carried the cotton found that his cotton had absorbed tons of water and became so heavy that he could no longer go on carrying it Desperately, he had to abandon the cotton and went back home empty-handed with his partner carrying gold
This story implies that we should deliberately utilize our wisdom and intelligence to make the right choice in face of every critical point in our life Meantime, we should not forget to review all the choices we have carefully and adjust our goal accordingly We should learn to view a certain issue from different angles and avoid being stubborn By opening your mind to the right choice, you will be guided to a smoother way to success
Man Is Here For The Sake of Other Men 人是为了别人而活着
Strange is our situation here upon earth Each of us comes for a short visit, not knowing why, yet sometimes seeming to divine a purpose
From the standpoint of daily life, however, there is one thing we do know that man is here for the sake of other men --- above all for those upon whose smile and well-being our own happiness depends, and also for the countless unknown souls with whose fate we are connected by a bond of sympathy Many times a day I realize how much my own outer and inner life is built upon the labors of my fellow men, both living and dead, and how earnestly I must exert myself in order to give in return as much as I have received My peace of mind is often troubled by the depressing sense that I have borrowed too heavily from the work of other men
To ponder interminably over the reason for one’s own existence or the meaning of life in general seems to me, from an objective point of view, to be sheer folly And yet everyone holds certain ideals by which he guides his aspiration and his judgment The ideals which have always shone before me and filled me with the joy of living are goodness, beauty, and truth To make a goal of comfort and happiness has never appealed to me; a system of ethics built on this basis would be sufficient only for a herd of cattle

once upon a time there was an island where all the feelings lived: happiness, sadness, knowledge, and all the others, including love one day it was announced to all of the feelings that the island was going to sink to the bottom of the ocean so all the feelings prepared their boats to leave
love was the only one that stayed she wanted to preserve the island paradise until the last possible moment when the island was almost totally under, love decided it was time to leave she began looking for someone to ask for help
just then richness was passing by in a grand boat love asked, "richness, can i come with you on your boat" richness answered, "i'm sorry, but there is a lot of silver and gold on my boat and there would be no room for you anywhere"
then love decided to ask vanity for help who was passing by in a beautiful vessel love cried out, "vanity, help me please!" "i can't help you," vanity said, "you are all wet and will damage my beautiful boat"
next, love saw sadness passing by love said, "sadness, please let me go with you" sadness answered, "love, i'm sorry, but, i just need to be alone now"
then, love saw happiness love cried out, "happiness, please take me with you" but happiness was so overjoyed that he didn't hear love calling to him
love began to cry then, she heard a voice say, "come love, i will take you with me" it was an elder love felt so blessed1 and overjoyed that she forgot to ask the elder his name when they arrived on land the elder went on his way love realized how much she owed the elder
love then found knowledge and asked, "who was it that helped me" "it was time,' knowledge answered "but why did time help me when no one else would "love asked knowledge smiled and with deep wisdom and sincerity, answered, "because only time is capable of understanding how great love is
