在高尔夫球场当球童的，好些可是穷得够惨的，家里就是那么个单间屋子，前院还得养上一条蔫头搭脑的奶牛。但是德克斯特·格林却不一样，他爸爸开设的杂货店是黑熊镇上的第二家大杂货店（最大的一家叫“天心号”，是专傲雪莉岛上的有钱人买卖的）。德克斯特当球童，只是为了挣几个零钱花罢了。

入了残秋以后，一到天气日转寒峭、连日阴云不开之时，那就表明明尼苏达的漫长的冬天降临了。于是大地就像合上了白色的箱盖，积雪盖没了高尔夫球场的草地，德克斯特的滑雪板也就在那里如飞而过了。在这种季节里经过那一带，他总不免深深地感到怅惘——眼看球场只好闲搁上整整一个冬天，成了几只寒伧的麻雀的天下，他觉得那实在不是滋味。再说，夏天树上是彩旗招展，一派风光，而如今却只剩下些沙箱，寂寞地半埋在结硬的冰雪里，叫人见了也真不胜凄凉之感。翻过山顶时，风冷得有如刀割；要是有太阳的话，他就眯起眼睛，迎着那刺目的万点金光，索性慢慢地走上一阵。

四月一到，冬天突然就结束了。雪水一下子都流入了黑熊湖，连一些带着红球黑球早早赶在季节前头的高尔夫迷，都没有能赶上打个照面。一点也没有大事张扬，连像样的大雨都没下一场，严寒就那样悄悄地去了。

德克斯特明白，这北方的春天可是有些凄清难受的——不过他也了解，这里还有个绝妙的秋天。一到秋天，他自会紧握拳头，精神抖擞，不住地自言自语，只管叨念几句傻话，有时冷不防还会劲头十足地振臂一挥，仿佛眼前自有无数观众，自有千军万马。十月里他只觉得充满了希望，到十一月他已经得意得如痴如醉了，于是迷迷糊糊的，夏天在雪莉岛留下的一鳞半爪鲜明的印象就都在脑海里化开了。他顿时变成了高尔夫球冠军，在一场惊人精彩的比赛中击败了海德里克先生。他在幻想的球场上把这场球打了总有一百来遍，每一次每一个细节都各不相同——有时他胜得不费吹灰之力，有时他连打几个出色的好球才后来居上。他还像莫铁默·琼士先生那样，跳下了“皮尔斯埃罗”汽车，便神态凛然迈着方步踱进雪莉岛高尔夫球俱乐部的休息室——要不然就在一大群围观者的啧啧称羡下，在俱乐部浮码头的跳板上做了一次花式跳水表演……而旁边看得张口结舌的观众里，就有莫铁默·琼士先生。

后来有一天却发生了这样一件事：琼士先生——是那个地地道道的琼士先生，不是幻想中的琼士先生——竟然眼泪汪汪地来找德克斯特，他恭维德克斯特是……是俱乐部里最了不起的一个球童，说是琼士先生决不会亏待他，请他千万不要把活儿辞掉，因为俱乐部里别的……别的球童全都不行……侍候他打一场高尔夫球就要丢掉他一二十只球……哪次不是这样……

“不成，先生，”德克斯特回绝得挺干脆，“我不想再当球童了。”顿了一下，又补上一句：“我年纪太大啦。”

“看你也不过十三四岁嘛。再说你怎么早不辞，晚不辞，偏偏今儿早上就想把活儿辞啦？你不是答应过我，下个星期还要陪我去参加州里的比赛吗？”

“我想我年纪实在太大了。”

德克斯特把他的“甲等”球童牌还给了大班，算清了工钱，就回到黑熊镇上去了。

那天下午莫铁默·琼士先生一边喝酒，一边嚷嚷：“这么好的球童我还没见过第二个！从来不丢一个球！又勤快！又伶俐！也不多嘴！老老实实！懂得好歹！”

说起事情的根源，却全在于一个才十一岁的小姑娘。那看似个难看的姑娘，其实却是个美人坯子——一些长大后美丽得难描难摹、惹得许多男人苦恼无穷的姑娘，往往在前三两年都是这样貌不惊人的。不过那美人坯子的影子却早就依稀可辨。那微笑时嘴角往下一牵的神气，那——乖乖！——那简直是含情脉脉的眼波，总有一种有欠端庄的味道。这种女人总是很早就萌发出青春的活力。那在她的身上也已经完全看得出来，单薄的身子似乎遍身焕发出一派光艳。

她九点钟就急不可耐地来到了球场上，还有个穿白亚麻布衣服的保姆伴随在侧，白帆布袋里插了五根全新的小高尔夫棒，也由保姆背着。德克斯特第一眼看到她时，见她正站在球童室旁边，显得很有点局促不安，为了掩饰这不安的神情，她就讪讪地特意找话跟保姆说，还莫名其妙地做了几个怪里怪气的鬼脸子。

“哎，今天的天气倒是不坏呀，希尔达。”德克斯特听见她说。只见她嘴角往下一牵，微微一笑，偷偷往四下里溜了一眼，眼光经过德克斯特时，在他身上停留了一下。

随即她又对保姆说：

“哎，我看今儿早上大概打球的人不多吧？”

又是一笑——盈盈的一笑，做作的痕迹明显极了——然而却是那样迷人。

“我真不知道咱们该怎么办。”保姆嘴里这么说，眼睛却哪儿也没瞧着。

“不要紧，我有办法。”

德克斯特站在那里一动也没动，连嘴都没有闭拢。他知道他要是跨前一步，两道目光就要跟她的视线相遇，可要是朝后一退，又看不清楚她的脸。他并没有一下子就看出这还是个很小的小姑娘。过了一阵，才记起原来这个小姑娘他去年曾经见过几次——那时还穿着小灯笼裤呢。

突然他不由自主地笑了出来，笑得很唐突，很冒昧，连他自己也吃了一惊，于是就一转身想赶快走开。

“小伙子！”

德克斯特站住了。

“小伙子——”

这分明叫的是他。岂止叫他，还赏了他一个笑脸呢——正就是那种异样的笑脸，那种稀奇的笑脸。好些男人见过她这种笑脸以后，直到中年还难以忘怀。

“小伙子，你可知道教师在哪儿？”

“给人上课去了。”

“那你知道球童大班在哪儿？”

“今天还没有来。”

“哦。”她一听，一时也不知如何是好。只好站在那里，两脚一前一后，换个不停。

“我们想要雇一个球童。”保姆说，“莫铁默·琼士太太让我们出来打高尔夫球。没有球童，我们不知道怎么打法。”

琼士**一个白眼，把她的话儿截住了。白眼之后，立刻又换上了那副笑脸。

“现在这儿就我一个球童，”德克斯特对保姆说，“我得在这儿看着，等大班来。”

“哦。”

主仆俩于是就退到了一边，跟德克斯特离得远远的，两个人在那儿谈着谈着，忽然争得不可开交。后来只见琼士**抽出一根高尔夫棒，在地上使劲乱敲。她觉得这还不够劲儿，又举起球棒打算朝保姆胸前狠命打去，保姆连忙一把抓住，把球棒夺了下来。

“你这个不得好死的讨厌的老东西！”琼士**一嚷就像发了疯似的。

接下来两个人又争了一通。德克斯特看见这场吵架很有些喜剧的色彩，几次忍俊不禁，不过他总是极力克制，尽量不笑出声来。他心里总觉得小姑娘打保姆打得有理，说什么也赶不掉这种古怪的想法。

幸而就在这时大班来了，于是一场风波顿时风平浪息。保姆马上就找上了大班。

“琼士**要雇一名球童，这一位说他走不开。”

德克斯特赶忙说：“麦肯纳先生叫我守在这儿，一定要等你来。”

“好啦，他现在不就来啦。”琼士**说着，满面春风地对大班笑了笑，随即就放下高尔夫袋，踏着矜持的细步，向第一个发球处走去。

“你怎么啦？”大班转过身来对德克斯特说，“你怎么还像个木头人似的，愣在那儿不动呀？还不去把**的球棒捡起来！”

“我今天不打算上工了。”德克斯特说。

“你不打算上工——？”

“我想把这里的活儿辞了。”

他居然作出了这样重大的决定，连自己也吓了一跳。他是个挺红的球童，在这儿干一夏天，可以挣到三十块钱一个月，你走遍沿湖一带，上哪儿也找不到这样的好差使。可是现在他内心受到了剧烈的震动，烦乱的心绪非得马上找个地方痛痛快快发泄一下不可。

其实，事情还不是这样简单。德克斯特以后也经常要碰到这样的情况——原来，他是不知不觉的，在冬天的梦指挥下行事的。
