猪八戒（木母）又名猪刚鬣、猪悟能。原为天宫中的“天蓬元帅”，掌管天河水军。因在王母瑶池蟠桃宴上醉酒，逞雄闯入广寒宫，企图调戏霓裳仙子，霓裳再三再四不依从，东躲西藏心不悦，被纠察灵官奏明玉皇，惹怒玉帝，被罚下人间。

沙僧原为天宫中的卷帘大将，因在蟠桃会上打碎了琉璃盏，惹怒玉皇大帝，被贬入人间，在流沙河畔当妖怪，受万箭穿心之苦。后被唐僧师徒收服，一路主要负责牵马。

唐僧，俗姓陈，小名江流儿，法号玄奘，号三藏，被唐太宗赐姓为唐。为如来佛祖第二弟子金蝉子投胎。他是遗腹子，由于父母凄惨、离奇的经历，自幼在寺庙中出家、长大，在金山寺出家，最终迁移到京城的著名寺院中落户、修行。

在取经的路上，唐僧先后收服了三个徒弟：孙悟空、猪八戒、沙僧，并取名为：悟空（菩提祖师所取，唐僧赐别号行者）、悟能、悟净，之后在三个徒弟和白龙马的辅佐下，历尽千辛万苦，终于从西天雷音寺取回三十五部真经。功德圆满，加升大职正果，被赐封为旃檀功德佛。

猪八戒最终得正果，封号为“净坛使者”。为人好吃懒做，憨厚，胆小，且贪图小便宜、好色，但他又是富有喜剧色彩的，而且有时也立有功劳。

猪八戒的兵器是九齿钉耙,全名为上宝沁金钯。猪八戒只会天罡数的三十六种变化。

猪八戒最终得成正果后，被封为“金身罗汉”。为人忠厚老实、任劳任怨。
