举重是一项历史悠久的运动，是以举起的杠铃重量为胜负依据的体育运动，由抓举和挺举两个项目构成。

举重的最高组织机构为国际举重联合会，1920年成立，总部设在匈牙利首都布达佩斯。中国的举重最高组织机构为中国举重协会，成立于1956年。

使用杠铃、哑铃、壶铃等器材进行锻炼和比赛的运动项目，为举重。举重运动员要完成两个举重动作：抓举和挺举。在抓举比赛中，要求选手伸直双臂，用一次连续动作将杠铃举过头顶。而在挺举比赛里，选手需要先将杠铃置于双肩之上，身体直立，然后再把杠铃举过头顶。运动员要等到裁判判定站稳之后才能算成绩有效。
