“套话”当然不是褒义词,某种程度而言,“套话”即绝对真理、绝对重复、绝对没有新意……在领导讲话、发言人答记者问、或是工作报告中,套话不失为绝好的语言艺术,它虽无实意却很实用。英语中,“套话”可用“cut-and-dried words”来形容。

据说,“cut and dried”(字面意:砍下和风干)源于伐木业。长在林间的树木若要成为商用木材,锯下后必被风干,同时,锯下的木材必得合乎标准长宽。由此,这种“standardized lumber that is cut and dried”(风干后合乎标准的方材)常用来比喻某类言行从不标新立异、某种结果已在预料之中、某类影片成一种套路模式。 看下面这个例句:

Hollywood has long been famous for movie plots so cut and dried (好莱坞影片常走一种套路是众人皆知的。)

中国有句俗语:内行看门道,外行看热闹。所谓“懂门道”,即知晓驾驭事物的内在诀窍。英语中,片语“to know the ropes”可表达“懂门道/在行”相应的语义内涵。

就词源而言,“rope”原指“船上的绳索”。习语“to know the ropes”出自水手——航船上的新手要成为合格的水手首先得学会摆弄桅绳,在新手学会操作那一大堆桅绳后(after he learns the ropes),他自然而然也就是熟知桅绳操纵的老手了。由此,“to know the ropes/to learn the ropes”常喻指“掌握诀窍/内在规律”,而“to show the ropes”则用来形容“教某人学习其中的门道”。

看下面两个例句:Nobody knows the ropes about the auto business better than my Uncle Joe He’s been selling cars for thirty years and he’s become an expert at closing deals with customers 做汽车生意没人能比Joe叔叔更在行。他销售汽车有三十年了,已经成了和顾客讲价成交的专家。

看过一幅漫画:雇员要求老板加薪,老板随即奉上一杯生啤,不过啤酒里面却放了一个鸡蛋…… 若要破解老板的言外之意,得需要一点文化背景。英语中,Egg in your beer(直译为“啤酒里加鸡蛋”)指的是“得寸进尺”。  

“Egg in your beer”的说法最早出现于20世纪初,二战时被美国大兵广泛使用。关于它的起源,一种观点认为,加有生鸡蛋的啤酒会激起人的性欲,对于生活在兵营里的大兵来讲,喝“春药”当然是非分之想了。不过,更有说服力的推测是,战时鸡蛋和啤酒都很紧俏,能得到其中一样就是很不错的享受了,若两者皆想拥有,那就是“得寸进尺”了。

所以说,那幅“鸡蛋加啤酒”的漫画意在说:What else do you want Egg in you beer You already have it good(该有的好处你已经得到了。还想怎么样?得寸进尺吗?)
