Now, the VOA Special English program WORDS AND THEIR STORIES
Every week at this time we tell the story of words and expressions used in American English
Some of them are old Some are new
Together, they form the living speech of the American people
Some popular expressions are a mystery
No one is sure how they developed
One of these is the expression, carrying a chip on your shoulder
carry a chip on one's shoulder
A person with a chip on his shoulder is a problem for anybody who must deal with him
He seems to be expecting trouble
Sometimes he seems to be saying, "I'm not happy about anything, but what are you going to do about it"
A chip is a small piece of something, like a chip of wood
Chip
How did this chip get on a person's shoulder
Well, experts say the expression appears to have been first used in the United States more than one hundred years ago
其反义短语为get off
One writer believes that the expression might have come from an old saying
The saying warns against striking too high, or a chip might fall into your eye
That could be good advice
They can't be in the dining room now 他们现在不可能在餐厅里。
The light in the study is still on Dad must be working
Mike may (might) hurt in the traffic accident
He must have finished his homework yesterday
If you strike high up on a tree with an axe, the chip of wood that is cut off will fall into your eye
get the axe 被开除
ave an axe to grind
get the sack 和 give sb the sack 是口语中用得比较多的俚语
get the heave-ho 和 give sb heave-ho heave-ho 表示“抛弃”“扔 掉”,get the heave-ho 和 give sb the axe 指(被)开除或解雇
get the pink slip pink slip“粉红的小纸条”, 在美国公司老板如果要解聘员工,就在员工的工资袋里加一张“粉红纸条”,说明雇员被解雇的原因。
The saying became a warning about the dangers of attacking people who are in more important positions than you are
be in danger of v 有危险
Later, in the United States, some people would put a real chip on their shoulder as a test
no later than adv 不迟于
see you later 再见,回头见
sooner or later 迟早,早晚
take care of sb later
talk to you later
They wanted to start a fight
They would wait for someone to be brave enough to try to hit it off
1 Enough has been said on this subject
2 No, thanks I’ve had enough 不,谢谢。 (enough=enough food)
We’ve had enough of what you done
I'm not good enough
be good / kind enough to do sth
The word chip appears in a number of special American expressions
Chip
a number of意思是“许多”,相当于 many,修饰可数名词复数。
Another is chip off the old block
This means that a child is exactly like a parent
另一个说法是chip off the old block,意思是酷像父母的小孩子。
a chip off the old block表示”外表或性格酷似父母中一个的孩子;一个模子里出来的“
This expression goes back at least to the early sixteen hundreds
better early than late
bright and early 大清早
early and late adv
early in the morning

A chip off the old block, I promise you!"
The word chip can also be used in a threatening way to someone who is suspected of wrongdoing
Chip
be suspected of wrongdoing涉嫌违法行为

This means the investigation is going to be complete and honest

let the chips fall where they may决定采取行动;不管其后果如何
It is also a warning that no one will be protected from being found guilty
Chips are often used in card games They represent money

F2: Yeah, I think so I don't see any future in our relationship
F1: Is there anyone else you're interested in
F2: No, but there are some guys on the internet who have sent me messages
F1: What, you've been online
F2: Sure, just for fun It's nice to know that I can meet people if I want to
F1: Does your boyfriend know about it
F2: No, if he knew it, he'll be furious He can be very jealous, and he has a violent temper
F1: Anyway, what was your fight about
F2: Oh, it's just the way he talks to me He never shows any interest in what I'm doing or in what I'm feeling If I have a bad headache or anything he says nothing
F1: So who started the fight
F2: He came over and wanted to kiss me, and I turned away I told him I didn't feel anything for him right then So then he got angry, and we both blew up Now we're not talking to each other
F1: Oh, is that all That kind of thing is normal Maybe you're overreacting
F2: No, it's just that I'm beginning to realize that I don't feel anything for him anymore
Our relationship is getting cold I don't feel appreciated
F1: Well then, maybe you should break up for a while and start seeing other man But be careful If I were you, I wouldn't start seeing anybody else until I break up first
F2: Why do you think so
F1: If he sees that you're serious about breaking up, he may change
F2: Maybe, but I doubt it
F1: It could be that he feels the same way about you Maybe he has lost interest So it's best to find out You need to have a serious conversation with him
F2: Hemm, you're right Maybe it's time to really find out
