了解红、蓝宝石的质量评价因素，无论是指导珠宝商的营销策略，还是作为消费者在购买时的参考，都是具有很大意义的。红、蓝宝石的质量评价体系与钻石的“4C”评价体系基本一致，但与钻石相比，红、蓝宝石的质量评价却更复杂,也更具主观性，目前在国际上仍未有一个统一的标准。美国宝石学院（GIA）提出的关于有色宝石分级的方法和系统在北美地区是最常用的，主要是为天然、透明、未经优化处理的刻面宝石而设计的。对于红、蓝宝石的分级评价，目前比较具代表性的有泰国亚洲珠宝学院（AIGS）的分级评价体系和日本Yasakaza Suwa 先生的分级评价体系。无论是采用何种分级体系，在评价红、蓝宝石的质量时,主要有以下几个方面：颜色(color)、净度（clarity）、切工(cut) 和重量（carat）。

颜色（color）

颜色是影响有色宝石评价的最重要因素。在对红、蓝宝石进行质量评价时首先应判断宝石的颜色色调。天然宝石的颜色应该是由主色调和附色调共同组成的，如红宝石的颜色以红色为主，其间还会伴有比较微弱的粉色、橙色或紫色的色调；蓝宝石的颜色除了主要的蓝色以外，还经常会伴有绿色或**的色调。一般来说，红、蓝宝石的主色调所占的比例越大，颜色越接近光谱色，则其颜色质量越高，而当附色调所占的比例越大，颜色就越不纯正，颜色质量就会越低。因此，红宝石的颜色以纯红色为最佳，蓝宝石则以不带绿色色调的纯蓝色为最佳。

红、蓝宝石颜色的饱和度和明亮度，也是影响颜色评价的重要因素。饱和度是指色彩的鲜艳度或纯净度。可见光光谱中的各个单色光所具有的饱和度是最高的，也就是说当宝石的颜色越接近于单色光，其饱和度就越高，颜色也就会越鲜艳。明亮度是指人眼对颜色明暗程度的感觉。宝石颜色的明亮度与宝石的色调和宝石本身对光的反射或透射能力有关。一般颜色质量较高的红、蓝宝石应具有较高的饱和度以及适中的明亮度

为四粒蓝色刚玉宝石所呈现的不同的颜色饱和度及明亮度。宝石1的颜色饱和度低但明亮度高；宝石2的颜色饱和度和明亮度都比较好；宝石3在一些部分的颜色饱和度比宝石2的还高，但整体的色调及明亮度偏深，至使宝石的光泽降低；宝石4的颜色饱和度以及明亮度都很低，宝石显得黯淡无光。
